Effect of Plug Cell Size and Seedling Age on Growth and Yield of Chinese Chives (Allium tuberosum R.)

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of plug cell size and seedling age on growth and yield of Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum R.). Seedling growth was generally increased with increasing plug cell size and seedling age. After transplanting, percentage of taking root was decreased with decreasing cell size and seedling age. Seedling growth, measured at 60 days after transplanting, was decreased with decreasing cell size, but was not affected by seedling age. The number of tillers was increased with increasing seedling age in 72, 128, and 162 cell trays but was not different in 200 and 288 cell trays regardless of seedling age. However, the number of tillers was decreased with decreasing cell size. Leaf yield of plant grown from 45 or 60 days old seedlings was not significantly different in all plug cell sizes except 72 plug cell size.
